Further success for Lakenheath Muzzle Loaders at 2009 North of England Muzzle Loading & Black Powder Breech Loading Championships
Further success for Lakenheath Muzzle Loaders at 2009 North of England Muzzle Loading & Black Powder Breech Loading Championships
On the 26th April, six members of the Lakenheath Muzzle Loaders, Dave Elvin, David Ellis, Bev Keeble, Alan Wellings, Clare Mills & Martin Crix made the long trip up to Yorkshire to compete in the North of England Muzzle Loading & Black Powder Breech Loading Championships. Hosted by our friends The Yorkshire Powder Burners, on behalf of the MLAGB, this shoot, held at Carleton Gun Club near Skipton, was the first National Muzzle Loading Sporting Clay Shoot of 2009.
The weather, I'm pleased to report was totally different from last year in that it was bright and sunny with a little breeze which steadily increased throughout the day. The usual crowd, along with a few new faces, turned out to make a total of 39 competitors who between them shot 105 cards.
The shooting ground is in an old quarry and, as usual, the targets were exceptionally well presented. All targets were within comfortable range and were hittable as long as concentration was maintained.
Stand 1. - A low quartering, dropping, left to right incomer, barely a couple of feet above the heather. This target seemed most appropriate because, although I have never shot grouse, I could easily imagine they would resemble these targets.
Stand 2. – A very fast, slightly quartering, overhead going away bird. Probably one of the trickiest targets on the course as it was dropping and extremely fast.
Stand 3. – A right to left, high looper. A great target not often seen at muzzle loading shoots but not unfamiliar to the Lakenheath contingent!
Stand 4. - A trademark Yorkshire Powder Burners target this one! Thrown from a trap on the top of the quarry bank, the clay rapidly curled down the bank in front of the shooter at an angle of about 45 degrees. This bird proved difficult for some but ok for others. Funny old game this clay shooting! Pete, you need to get your earth bank built up if we are to practice this one!
Stand 5. – Launched from the top of the quarry bank, this clay was a high, fairly slow, right to left crosser which was taken well by most.
The regular monthly shoots held at Lakenheath really paid dividends for us. Of the 10 available competitions, the Lakenheath Muzzle Loaders won 7 of them! I'm sure this is largely down to the superb & varying courses set by both Andre & Tony. Thanks Guys!
Clare Mills, shot an excellent 20 ex 30 in the Pennine Double Barrel to find herself in a shoot off for 3rd place. Clare, who is still getting her head around double triggers, has only been shooting a double gun for about 3 weeks – well done! In addition she won the Ladies Cup by just one target – don't make it so close next time, it's bad for our nerves!
Another Lakenheath regular is David Ellis, who only in his second year of black powder shooting, continued his excellent hammer gun form by winning both the single & double Association hammer gun competitions – superb shooting!
Bev Keeble shot his flintlock superbly to win the Bernie Inns Flintlock Trophy. This was an excellent achievement as some the opposition are among the very best flintlock shotgunners in the world!
Martin Crix won the North of England Muzzle Loading Open Championship with the highest score of the day, just one target short of the maximum. The prize was an elegant engraved glass tankard, 30 guineas & a case of Yorkshire Ale! He also went on to win the single barrel & double barrel competitions.
The Lakenheath Muzzle Loaders are offering a free transfer from Yorkshire to Suffolk for 75 year old Peter Knowles who shot brilliantly in the North of England Open Hammer Gun competition to win a beautiful engraved whisky tumbler, 30 guineas & good bottle of single malt! Well done Peter.
Thanks go to the Yorkshire Powder Burners for putting on such a great shoot. Everyone had a super day and they enjoyed the legendary YPB hospitality.
