The Gordon Thomas Memorial Skeet 2009.
Lakenheath was graced with perfect conditions for the 2009 Gordon Thomas Memorial shoot. The entry was 55 most of whom had known Gordon at some time in their skeet career. Many of us had shot with Gordon in the England Skeet team and this is where our skeet fraternity bond of friendship graduated.
The Memorial shoot consists of 100 CPSA English Skeet. The spoils are not big heaps of cash but the privilege to get ones name on one of the two coveted memorial trophies. The big cup is the Memorial Cup and is for the high gun on the day. The smaller cup is strictly for the highest score by a veteran. Gordon over many years campaigned that the veterans were the forgotten shooter. By shooting for this cup, we Gordon's friends, believe we are putting something back that Gordon would have enjoyed immensely. The picture tells the story. The name on the big cup this year is Colin Welburn (on the left) who shoot 100 straight and beat Steven Smith into runner up place. The "old gits cup" was appropriately won this year by Peter Bloomfield (on the right), with Christine Thomas the rose between the two thorns!
The Lady Champion was Gill Billington, the Junior Champion was Louis Mondesir and the winning Colt was Stanley Baughan.
Aside from meeting old skeet friends and having a good day shooting skeet, we try each year to raise as much as we can for a charity designated by Christine and her family. This year the money will go to the Sandra Chapman Centre (Oncology Unit) at the James Paget Hospital.
This year raised £1200 plus the winnings from several shooters at the shoot. A considerable chunk of the collection comes from an anonymous friend of the skeet world, Tom Munro.
To date the skeet fraternity, assisted by Tom, has raised £6,196 in Gordon's name. R I P Gordon, your often missed but never forgotten old mate. |
